Earthquake experts from across the region are coming to St. Louis on Thursday, March 3 for the fourth annual Missouri Earthquake Summit. Previously held in the heart of the New Madrid Seismic Zone in southeast Missouri, the summit is coming to St. Louis for the first time, and will be held at the Saint Louis Science Center. 

Hundreds of attendees from throughout the region will gather to learn the latest about earthquakes in the Midwest – risks, preparedness strategies and recovery planning. Experts will lead sessions focused on the latest geological findings, business continuity, insurance challenges, transportation plans, community organization response, building evaluation, communication strategies, and more. (This is a professional development conference that requires advance registration.)

The New Madrid Seismic Zone, centered in southeast Missouri, is the most active seismic zone in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains, averaging more than 200 small earthquakes each year. In 1811-12 it produced some of the strongest earthquakes ever felt in North America. While no one can predict exactly when an earthquake will occur, scientists agree that a large New Madrid Seismic Zone earthquake is a significant risk. A large quake would cause shaking and damage for hundreds of miles in every direction, including the St. Louis area.
